What is E-Learning? From Registration to Course Certificate – How It Works

By AlonLearn Team
What exactly is e-learning, and why has it become the preferred method for professional development in the workplace? In this article, we take a closer look at the technology behind it, how courses are developed, and how you as an administrator gain full control over participant progress.
What is E-Learning? From Registration to Course Certificate – How It Works
Watch the video below, where Chris Tomkins from SCORM Cloud provides a precise definition of what e-learning entails in today's digital landscape. ## What is E-Learning? Simply put, e-learning (electronic learning) is education that takes place via digital tools and the internet. What makes e-learning so effective for both companies and employees is the combination of four factors: - Accessibility: Learn anywhere, anytime (asynchronous learning) - Platforms: All you need is a web browser - Varied content: From simple quizzes to interactive simulations and videos - Flexibility: Equally suitable for school certification and mandatory HSE courses in the workplace At AlonLearn, we view e-learning as a cohesive ecosystem. It's not just about the course itself, but about the entire journey from production and registration to tracking results. ### 1. Registration and Administration (LMS) Before a participant—whether an employee, customer, or partner—can begin learning, the logistics must be in place. This is handled by a Learning Management System (LMS). A modern LMS manages complex parameters such as: - Access control: Should the course only be for a specific department or role? - Prerequisites: Must the participant have passed "Course A" before accessing "Course B"? - Finance: Handling payment, invoicing, and discount codes (e.g., membership benefits or early bird) ### 2. Execution and Tracking (LRS with SCORM Cloud) When the participant starts the course, this happens in an e-learning player. What happens "under the hood" is crucial for the company: everything done in the course must be logged and stored. This is where we use a Learning Record Store (LRS). The largest and best player in this field globally is SCORM Cloud, and to ensure seamless data traffic, SCORM Cloud is fully integrated into AlonLearn. This means you get reliable reporting on: - How much time the participant spent - Whether the course was completed and passed - All data is shared back to the LMS so that course certificates are issued automatically ### 3. How is the Course Developed? (Authoring Tools) The course itself is built in an authoring tool. - Traditional tools: Programs like Articulate and Adobe Captivate function as advanced, interactive PowerPoint tools - Modern AI tools: Courseau leads the way here. It's a "prompt-based" tool that uses AI (similar to ChatGPT) to generate course content lightning-fast. For the most efficient workflow, Courseau is integrated with AlonLearn, making the path from idea to published course shorter than ever When the course is finished, it's exported as a SCORM or CMI5 package. These are universal file formats (based on HTML) that ensure the content works flawlessly in your AlonLearn solution.

What Are LMS, LXP, LRS and Authoring Tools – and When Do You Need What?

LMS, LXP, LRS and authoring tools are often mentioned together, but they serve different purposes in a modern learning ecosystem. To choose the right learning platform, it is essential to understand what each system does, how they work together – and when you actually don’t need them.
